The Resistance brings all the good guys of the New Star Wars Trilogy: Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Rose Tico and General Leia Organa - leader of the Resistance - to the game table. Furthermore, you will find old acquaintances such as Han Solo and Chewbacca, just a little older. In addition to them, you will find several characters from the Resistance animated series in the Fireball expansion.
Speaking of starships, the Resistance is mostly based on the new generations of starfighters already present among the forces of the Rebel Alliance such as the T-70 X-Wing, the RZ-2 A-Wing and that rusty pile of scrap metal the Millennium Falcon . While the ships look very similar to the Rebel ships, they are designed to be played differently. Resistance ships will not have the same dependence on the range between one ship and another to trigger abilities: this means that you will have more freedom of movement, but you will also have more chance of making mistakes if you are not careful.
As with the Rebels, the Resistance has durable ships that can be excellent “training ships” for beginners. Furthermore, there are no particularly bad ships, so you can easily buy the ships you like and be able to make a functioning squadron. In addition to starfighters, you will have a couple of more substantial options available, represented by the Millennium Falcon and the MG-100 Starfortress (Resistance Bomber). Be careful though because you will need a Conversion Kit to put them on the table.
The Resistance was a part of Rebels during the first edition and had only 4 ships. There is a Conversion Kit (only for 3 types of ships), but with the Black Box releases you can get all the ships fresh except only two ships. There are two major pathways to collect all the friends of the Resistance, although in reality one will be faced with a mixture of both depending on your LGS stocks and community at large:
This is suitable for the first time players and focuses on contemporary releases from the start of the second edition.
This is aimed at first edition veterans or players who obtained a large collection of minies with outdated first edition cardboard.
The X-Wing Core Set comes with zero Scum ships - so the question is, what is it doing here?
First of all, It also has all necessary tools and accessories to play the game: range ruler, maneuver templates, dice (3+3), obstacles and one damage deck.
More importantly, the Core Set is a great way to test the game on a smaller scale! But keep in mind: it contains the rules for 2.0 (FFG/Legacy) version of the game. If you want an updated Rule Book for 2.5 (AMG) version for this set - we got you covered:
If you just want to try out the game - the Core Set is a way to do. Even if you later trade all ships and leave yourself with tools to play the game.
But if you insist on having a pure start, you can get all the tools separately:
This pack contains plastic maneuver templates and a range ruler with segments to make your measurements quick and precise. You can paint, just don't forget to varnish it after!
Dice Pack contains three red attack dice and three green defense dice, identical to the dice included in the Core Set.
This deck contains a complete set of damage cards that correspond to those in the standard damage deck. The text on the cards is the same as that of the standard Damage cards, only the card graphics are different.
You've read it right - you are getting obstacles, all of them! Well not all, excluding particular Gas Clouds from the Separatists and Republic Squadron Packs, Asteroids and Debris from the Pride of Mandalore Reinforcements Pack. But that's a lot of obstacles plus some upgrades.
Great little pack! It contains cards with special setups for you game to spice things up.
So you bought all necessary tools to play the game, or maybe this is not you first faction...
Ok, calm down! We hear you asking: Where are our ships? Give us ships!
This pack does not contain just one ship but three: a true Faction Starter Kit. The Heralds of Hope Squadron Pack includes Resistance heroes like Poe Dameron and Temmin “Snap” Wexley, with teamwork abilities based on their appearances in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. These brave pilots charge into battle with two T-70 X-Wings and one RZ-2 A-Wing in unique colors with 12 different pilots and 25 upgrade cards invite you to further customize your Resistance squadrons.
The pack is very, very good in terms of “value you get” for the purchase for new players, but may be lacking for competitive players. It is better to add more standalone packs of T-70 X-Wing and RZ-2 A-Wings to further improve and diversify the pilots roster and upgrade options. So there is no real reason to buy two of these packs, but one is a must!
Now, lets talk about the T-70 and RZ-2 A-Wing:
One Heralds of Hope Squadron Pack is really not enough to make up a squad. Your first choice would be to multiply those T-70 and RZ-2 numbers:
The T-70 X-Wing is arguably one of the most all-rounder ships in the game, tough enough to be durable on the battlefield and with enough firepower to pose a threat to any adversary. Furthermore, the pilots are equipped with excellent skills useful in all phases of the game.
Nien Numb, Temmin Wexley, Jess Pava, and Lieutenant Bastian are very cost effective pilots. Another version of Poe Dameron is more inclined to go solo and do ace stuff. Most common upgrades are Heroic, R4 Astromech or BB Astromech.
You can field T-70s to the maximum of 4 ships. If you take generic pilots, you might be able to squeeze som chaep support.
Together with the T-70, the RZ-2 Wing represents the pillars of the Resistance squad-building. Smaller and more fragile than the T-70, an RZ-2 is one of the fastest ships in the game and has the ability to turn its turret to the rear arc. This makes them a rather difficult opponent to face because you will never know if they are about to shoot from the front, or dart past you and then turn the arc to shoot you from their rear.
Just like the T-70, there are several strong pilots, while individually not exactly heavyweights, an entire flock of RZ-2 A-Wings can be a nightmare to deal with.
Arguably the best pilot - Zizi Tlo - is hidden in the Hotshots and Aces Reinforcements Pack. But this pack contains other powerful options like L’ulo L’ampar and Tallissan Lintra. The most effective upgrade cards to equip are Crack Shot, Advanced Optics, Starbird Slash and/or Heroic, depending of current point cost.
Three bulky and powerful T-70s, who can work together or separately and annoying hard to kill RZ-2 - it's a good salad mix with a lot of meat not overpowered by to many upgrades. You can change your tactics depending on the battlefield conditions when need be.
There are more ships in the Resistance fleet to mix in your squads giving you interesting synergies and options:
If you have seen the Star Wars: Resistance series, you will surely have recognized the ship of the protagonist Kazuda Xiono - the Fireball. In the game this ship is a decent one, pushed out of the meta by the super-effectiveness of the T-70. Both in the "cheap and spammed" version and by equipping the sole pilots with expensive improvements it struggles a bit to surpass the popularity of other starfighters. It also has a rather unique ship ability very fitting to the name - Explosion with wings. We won't spoil it here, you'll have to find out for yourself!
The Resistance variation of the Y-Wing can be configured in two ways. It's base version is the weakest of all other three variants in the game. Thematically fitting with the New Republic disarmament program it has only 7 health and melts fast. However it is also quite cheap and can use the illicit upgrades that can give it an edge. Also using it as a cheap turret carrier is a good option. Some pilots like Lega Foslang revolve around amassing calculate tokens and can work as a team with other Y-Wings.
The other way is the war-time loadout. Its transforms Y-wing from the weakest to the most hard hitting and durable variants in the game with 2 extra shields and makes crits from ordnance unavoidable in the bullseye arc. If you want a hard hitting Y-Wing and fit him with expansive ordnance like Plasma torpedos this is the way to go. A good pilot to use here with a more expansive approach is the Ace Zori Bliss.
The Resistance Transport pack contains two ships: the transport itself on which Leia arrives in The Force Awakens, and the detachable Pod on which Finn and Rose travel to Canto Bight in The Last Jedi. On paper, neither appears to be too exciting, but don't be fooled by appearances – the little Pod has had an incredible impact on the meta and Resistance squad-building.
The Transport - or Resistance sofa for friends - is a crew and support transport ship. The biggest problem with is and maybe not even a problem at all: other Resistance ships are very strong and have little need for support! The proof of this -take Cova Nell, with the Leia Organa crew on board to become a backwards flying bruiser who can massacres anyone. It's hilarious!
Let's talk about the Pod: the tiny and the terrible. Three out of four pilots have seen the gaming table from the start, with Finn shining among them when equipped with Heroic. Or Rose Tico. Very annoying for your opponent and hard to kill.
These packs do not contain any ship minis, but what they have is cardboard in abundance to further expand your fleet: new pilots, new upgrades, game tokens that you might not have: like bombs or new obstacles. The rule of thumb is to check for which ships are you getting the pilots and upgrades before getting one.
This expansion gives new pilots and upgrades for multiple factions. The Resistance gets 3 new pilots:
Zizi is the main highlight of this pack. Plus you are getting some upgrades that were missing in Resistance black boxes but were in other factions.
It's a good pack to buy with friends, because you can split pilots by factions without any fuss.
Another pack, somewhat like a previous one, but only with new pilots. This time Resistance gets 5 new pilots:
It’s also worth noting these Hotshots and Aces have some odd printing choices with different faction pilots being on opposite sides of the same token. So splitting it with friends from other factions might not be possible.
Like a pack with obstacles, but instead - a bunch of mines and bombs: tokens and upgrade cards all in one package!
Another great little pack! It also contains cards with special setups for you game to spice things up.
" Somehow the Conversion Kit returned! " - as Poe Dameron once said.
The Resistance Conversion Kit contains not only components for two ships yet not re-released, but also lots of important Resistance upgrades such as
We will talk about the exact contents and possibilities of the Resistance Conversion Kit in the second section of the guide. For now let's look at the ships:
In the first edition of Heroes of the Resistance Expansion Pack you can find Black One T-70 and familiar looking pice of junk - YT-1300 Millennium Falcon.
Compared to the classic Falcon it is of course worn down and older. This is reflected by the lower health pool with 2 shields less and the rotate being red. But it is still a very good ship.
Pilots Rey and Chewy are built for high aggression and hitting hard. Especially Rey is very potent at that with being able to change blanks into hits. Add Rose and Finn on board turns her in what is known - the Death Rey! Meanwhile Chewy excels at being flown with many cheap ships as he gets of his revenge shot any time one of them blows up.
StarFortress tends to be a costly target for adversaries, just like in the movie. But once in a while a pilot can manage to get through the enemy defenses and punch him really hard.
True, the MG-100 is not a ship for everyone. It can certainly tank a lot of shots but it is hard to fly because it relies on bombs while being a big ship and very cumbersome to maneuver - sometimes self-harm is inevitable.
Vennie is a very effective pilot, who doesn't really need tons of points spent on weapons, bombs and crews and has the great advantage of contributing to the Bomber's almost non-existent defenses.
We have reached the end of Resistance standard ships, only Epic remain.
You got Rey and Friends, who a ready to unload a bunch of red dice in your opponents face and a couple of nimble and very hard to hit annoying mosquitos. When flown well this list can go about deleting one enemy ship per round.
So you have reached the end of the Black Box guide wondering, what else it there beyond your magnificent collection of ships and starfighters?
Two answers:
This expansion introduces a totally new way to play X-Wing, inviting 2 to 8 players to engage in epic multiplayer battles as they command massive fleets in large-scale games that evoke iconic Star Wars scenes.
It features 11 scenarios ranging from Free For All Deathmatch where each player controls only one ship to an Epic Battle where players fly coordinated wings of starfighters supporting huge ships. From desperate defensive actions to daring assaults on enemy fortifications, each scenario creates an exciting narrative.
Within this expansion, you'll find five wing tools that ease and speed up the game letting you fly your fighters in wings and not separately.
Within the Huge Ship Conversion Kit, X-Wing players will find all the components they need to upgrade their first edition huge ships: CR-90, C-ROC, Gozanti, GR-75 and Raider - to the second edition with unique mechanics and upgrades. These ships are not suitable for Standard play, there is a special Epic mode for them that intertwines with Epic Battles Multiplayer Expansion.
The Resistance gets GR-75 Medium Transport (support platform).
Needless to say that you need to have actual ships to use this Kit. But just look at these beauties below!
GR-75 Medium Transport comes with an additional T-65 model. Huge ship components from 1.0 are not used in epic 2.0, including the bases and pegs, but you can use those bases and pegs for any large ship in your collection.
You have reached the end of the Black Box guide to the Resistance.
We hope it will guide you on the path of igniting hope across the Galaxy!
The next guide, as we've said before, is aimed at first edition veterans or players who obtained a large collection of minis with outdated first edition cardboard:
Resistance Conversion Kit is a box of second edition cardboard designed specifically for this occasion.
It has components to make this list of ships fully operational again:
Plus it has a ton of upgrades and tokens.
If you need a general rundown on what these ships are - check out our Black Box Guide! We have covered that information starting from this section.
What this pack does not have are basic tools and components you will find in the Core Set. You will need a range ruler, maneuver templates, dice, obstacles and one damage deck to play. Range ruler didn't change from the first edition, so it might be out there in the pile, along with dice and obstacles. Maneuver templates got a central notch, so it'll be great to get new ones and the damage deck is completely new. If you want, you can grab a Core Set.
There is also an alternative:
This pack contains plastic maneuver templates and a range ruler with segments to make your measurements quick and precise. You can paint, just don't forget to varnish it after!
Dice Pack contains three red attack dice and three green defense dice, identical to the dice included in the Core Set.
This deck contains a complete set of damage cards that correspond to those in the standard damage deck. The text on the cards is the same as that of the standard Damage cards, only the card graphics are different.
The Conversion Kit is a powerful box, but to have all the content for you faction you still need a help of Black boxes to make your collection complete. Here some of those boxes, some will contain only carboard, some come with new minies and some with those you might already have, but in new paint jobs:

Otherwise this guide is over.
Now go out there and have some fun playing X-Wing!
